From buying groceries and mobile phones to using the banking service, insurance service, healthcare, transport, and other online services. The consumer regularly enters transactions that involve payment and expectations of good quality, safety, and fair treatment; however, in practice, the consumer often faces problems due to unfair trade practices, defective goods, poor services, misleading advertisements, overcharging, and lack of responsibility by the sellers or service providers.
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, was passed in India to protect consumer rights and to provide simple, quick, and low-cost solutions for consumer complaints, and even though legal remedies are available, many consumers are not aware of their rights or avoid taking action because the consumers feel the process is so complicated or time-consuming. Who is a consumer?
The consumer is a person who purchases the goods or uses services by paying the money to the seller or service provider, either fully or partly, for personal use. The consumer does not include a person who buys goods for resale or for business purposes. However, the person who purchases goods to earn a livelihood through self-employment is also considered a consumer under the law.
